Historically, The Creator Visionary Awards utilized a bust of David as the event’s primary visual asset. The styling of the david bust evolves between each event, and for 2022, the team had decided to stray from the traditional marble texturing that had been used previously, to a more slick, metallic direction. I was tasked with taking the initial concept, and creating the polished working assets for the campaign, in addition to creating marketing materials and digital signage for the event.
Modeling and Texturing
The 2022 Update to david required both an update to the structure of the model, as well as a retexturing. I took a 3d model of a VR headset and added it to the David model. Making sure to clean up the mesh for both the david and headset models to reduce vertices and make it easier to work with and export. After the model’s mesh was updated, I created a custom texture using blender’s node texture editor to achieve the desired iridescent metallic texture.
Creating usable assets for the team to use in production
After the model was updated, I set up a lighting rig and exported out a PNG sequence of the model rotating. This image set was used for motion assets, being directly imported into after effects. From this set, a handful of stills were copied over into a separate folder of stills for the team to utilize in static assets. The set of images allowed for our team to have the freedom to display the model from several angles.
Instagram AR Filter
Breathing new life into the David bust for the digital age, I tackled the task of bringing the Bust of David into an Instagram filter experience. Using Meta Spark and some geometry simplification in blender, I crafted a user-friendly AR encounter where people could interact directly with the metallic David on their phones.
Event Digital Signage
I created ambient and wayfinding digital signage for the event that were displayed on screens throughout the venue and around the main stage.
